Officers Caesar Goodson Jr., William G. Porter, Edward M. Nero, Garrett E. Miller, Sgt. Alicia D. White and Lt. Brian W. Rice, received indictments from involuntary manslaughter to false imprisonment. The rulings were handed down by the state’s attorney Marilyn Mosby earlier today (May 1).
It was reported that Gray, 25, suffered grave injuries while in police custody following an arrest on Apr. 12, during what’s being deemed as a “rough ride.” The brutal practice resulted in a severe spinal injury that led to his passing.
President Barack Obama also spoke out on Gray’s death, calling for justice to be served. Per ABC News, Obama stated:
It is absolutely vital that the truth comes out on what happened to Mr. Freddie Gray. It is my practice not to comment on the legal processes involved — that would not be appropriate — but I can tell you that justice needs to be served. All the evidence needs to be presented. Those individuals who are charged obviously are also entitled to due process and rule of law. And so I want to make sure that our legal system runs the way it should.
