Post elections, Senator Bukola Saraki of Kwara State emerged as the Senate President while Yakubu Dogara was voted Speaker of the House of Representatives.Both men are members of the All Progressive Congress (APC), but they are not backed by the Party according to an official statement by the APC.
This Tuesday a statement issued by the Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to the President, Mr. Femi Adesina, said the president would have preferred that the APC process of electing leaders been followed.
Adesina said, "Nonetheless the President took the view that a constitutional process has somewhat occurred.”
President Buhari had said in an earlier statement that he did not have any preferred candidate for the Senate and the House of Representatives, and that he was willing to work with whoever the lawmakers elected.
