“The WBO World Championship Committee is allowed no other alternative but to cease to recognize Mr. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. as the WBO Welterweight Champion of the World and vacate his title, for failing to comply with our WBO Regulations of World Championship Contests,” the organization said in a statement.
After winning the title against Manny Pacquiao back in May, the 38 year old said “I’m world champion at two different weight classes right now. … It’s time to let other fighters fight for the belt,” which is an issue the WBO had. According the organization’s rules, a fighter cannot hold titles in different weight classes in different organizations.
Mayweather holds the World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association, and Ring welterweight championships, along with the WBC, WBA, and Ring junior middleweight championships.
In a statement to ESPN, Floyd’s camp made sure to let folks know he ain’t worried about nothin’
“It’s a complete disgrace,” CEO Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions told ESPN.com. “Floyd will decide what, or if any, actions he will take. But in the meantime he’s enjoying a couple of hundred million he made from his last outing and this has zero impact on anything he does.
“Floyd Mayweather has a great deal of respect for each and every organization, as he has always had in his 19-year career, but he will not be dictated to by any organization or person as it relates to his decision making.”
