Robin Thicke is finally speaking out on the “Blurred Lines” verdict. Earlier this year, Marvin Gaye’s estate sued the singer and producer Pharrell Williams for reportedly copying the sound of the late R&B vocalist’s hit track “Got to Give It Up.”

As a result of a long court case, Gaye’s estate won the $7.4 million ruling, but Thicke has never revealed his thoughts on the outcome until now. In an interview with the New York Times, the “Lost Without You” crooner admitted his shock when he heard the verdict. “I was surprised. Very surprised.

Obviously, that’s why we’re appealing,” he said. “I know the difference between inspiration and theft. I’m constantly inspired, but I would never steal. And neither would Pharrell.”
