Ekweremadu was declared the winner of the election by a faction of Senators consisting of minority All Progressives Congress (APC) senators and a majority from the PDP.
The election was witnessed by the national leaders of the PDP and some of its governors, the Governors of Rivers, Ondo and Cross River States were in the Senate chambers to witness the contentious election.
The result as announced by the Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly indicated that a total number of 75 senators took part in the voting.
Out of this, Ekweremadu got 54 while his main challenger, Senator Ali Ndume got 20 votes
One of the senators was said to have absented himself from voting.
It is the first time in Nigeria political history that a Deputy Senate President would emerge from the opposition party.
Senator Saraki is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) while his deputy is from the PDP.
Senator Ndume is slated to become the "Senate Majority Leader" by the Saraki faction.
