Old Dixie Highway in Riviera Beach, FL is no more. Now when you travel down that highway you’ll be driving on President Barack Obama Highway.

Riviera Beach officials renamed the highway. The new sign went up on Thursday displaying the name of the United States of America’s first black president.

This highway holds a lot of history and memories for many people. Old Dixie officials have said it paid homage to an era that glorified slavery.

The name was symbolic of racism that took place many years ago, cross burnings and the KKK and Riviera Beach Mayor, Thomas Masters says it was time for change.

#BBB NEWS| US: Former Convicts No Longer Have To Make Their Criminal Past Known On Federal Job Applications

President Obama announced Monday (November 2nd) an executive order which bans federal employers from asking about an applicant’s criminal history until later on in the application process.

The order known as “ban the box” which describes the actual checkbox on applications that inquires if applicant have ever been convicted of a crime, is intended to help former convicts successfully re-enter into society.

While many employers who argue against the move say the checkbox is a commonsense way to vet who they’re potentially hiring, criminal justice reform activists have long charged this process to be just one of the many hurdles former inmates looking for a fresh start must overcome.

The United States offered Niger two military surveillance planes Wednesday as attacks by suspected Boko Haram extremists continued in the country’s south-east region bordering Nigeria.

Two Niger soldiers were killed and several injured Wednesday in a foiled suicide attack by suspected Boko Haram fighters, Defence Minister Mahamadou Karidjo said.

Karidjo spoke as he took possession of two Cessna C-208 planes equipped with intelligence and reconnaissance systems, as well as around 30 military vehicles and ambulances. A US official said the aid was worth around 32 million euros.

The aircraft “will enable Niger’s armed forces to identify local threats and better secure the border,” said US Ambassador Eunice Reddick.

President Muhammadu Buhari immediately shut down a question about same-sex marriage in Nigeria during a session with US Congress members in Washington, DC.

According to his spokesman Femi Adesina, President Buhari was “point blank” with the American lawmakers.

“Sodomy is against the law in Nigeria, and abhorrent to our culture,” Mr. Adesina said in a tweet on Wednesday.

The Nigeria leader arrived in the US via the Andrews Airfare Base around 4p.m. EST on Sunday and immediately moved into the Blair House guest house of the US President.

After checking-in, the President met with members of his entourage, which includes five state governors and members of his All Progressives Congress party. He had dinner with former US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, following which he met Lawal Idris, Professor John Baden, Patrick Berry and Ahmad Abubakar before retiring to bed.

President Buhari earlier met with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden at the Oval Office at the US White House, the National security advisor Susan Rice and Secretary of State John Kerry were also in attendance.   He will also have an audience with the US Secretary of Commerce, Penny Pritzker, to discuss how to improve business relations between both countries.

Next week's visit to Washington by President Muhammadu Buhari is viewed by the U.S. administration as a chance to set the seal on improving ties since he won a March election hailed as Nigeria's first democratic power transition in decades.

U.S. cooperation with Buhari’s predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, had virtually ground to a halt over issues including his refusal to investigate corruption and human rights abuses by the Nigerian military.

"President (Barack Obama) has long seen Nigeria as arguably the most important strategic country in sub-Saharan Africa," U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Tony Blinken told Reuters. "The question is would there be an opportunity to deepen our engagement and that opportunity is now."

The improving ties with Nigeria, Africa's biggest oil producer, come as U.S. relations have cooled with two other traditional Africa powers - Egypt and South Africa.

The American support, contained in a press statement issued by the White House late on Wednesday, is to provide assistance to France which has been actively supporting Nigeria’s French speaking neighbors—Niger and Chad—in their fight against Boko Haram insurgents as well as Mali, which is battling Islamist extremism.

The three French-speaking have been in the forefront of the war against the dreaded Islamist terrorist group.

Curiously, America’s new support did not mention Nigeria, the country worst hit by Boko Haram’s terrorist assaults. The conspicuous omission of Nigeria has raised questions in diplomatic circles whether the apparent snub represented a continuing fallout from strained relations between the Goodluck Jonathan administration and President Barack Obama over the former’s original questionable response to the Boko Haram menace.

The United States government appears set to sanction Nigeria’s ​first lady, Patience Jonathan, a former Niger Delta minister, Godsday Orubebe, ​and ​the ​governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shema, and other Nigerians accused of either disrupting the just concluded elections, or instigating violence.

The U.S. said Monday that it will impose visa restrictions on any Nigerian found to have incited violence or interfered with the electoral process.

The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said in a​ statement that the U.S. will shut its doors on people involved in any form of violence during the polls.

“Anyone found to have incited violence or interfered with electoral processes will be unwelcome in the United States and subject to visa sanctions,” Ms. Thomas-Greenfield said.

#BBB NEWS| I’ll Restore Military Ties With The US – Buhari

The President-elect, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday said his administration would restore military cooperation with the United States of America.

In an article published by the New York Times in its Tuesday edition, Buhari promised to among other things reformed the military.

The outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration had cancelled the training component of its military cooperation with the US citing a lack of sincerity on the part of the Americans for its decision.

But Buhari said, “My administration would welcome the resumption of a military training agreement with the United States, which was halted during the previous administration. We must, of course, have better coordination with the military campaigns our African allies, like Chad and Niger, are waging in the struggle against Boko Haram. But, in the end, the answer to this threat must come from within Nigeria.”
