Jerry Heller’s may have passed on, but his beef with Straight Outta Compton isn’t dead yet. A lawyer for N.W.A’s onetime manager, wants to keep the battle alive by blaming the film for Heller’s death.

Heller, 75, died Friday (Sept. 2) after reportedly suffering a heart attack and crashing his car. According to TMZ, lawyer Mickey Shapiro says Heller’s health took a hit because of the way he was portrayed in the film.

Shapiro asserts that Heller, who was diabetic, became distraught and lost sleep over the way he was portrayed in Straight Outta Compton.

Aretha Franklin is kicking into high gear. Back in 2011, the Queen of Soul announced she was working on a biopic of her iconic life, after almost a five-year hiatus, she says she has plans to really follow through.

“Good news, we’re ready to sign for the movie,” The singer said in an interview, according to Billboard.

The exciting news was matched by even more great news, when the “Respect” singer revealed she has been trying to link with Scott Bernstein, who produced the highly acclaimed biopic for N.W.A., Straight Outta Compton.

“We’ve agreed on all the key points. There’s very little left now (to negotiate), very little. They have given me creative control and that’s all I wanted,” she said.

If you think Ice Cube is upset about his co-produced film Straight Outta Compton only receiving one Academy Award nomination, surprisingly, you’d be wrong.

Cube stopped by The Wendy Williams Show Thursday (January 14) shortly after the nominations were announced, and in essence let the snub roll off his back.

“I’m not pissed, I’m not surprised. It’s the Oscars, they do what they do,” the 45-year-old rap veteran said. “The people love the movie and the people supported the movie.”

The NWA biopic, which was also produced by Dr. Dre and Eazy-E’s widow, received aBest Original Screenplay nominations. The F. Gary Gray directed film, which debuted last August, smashed box office records earning $200 million million worldwide as well as landing at No. 1.

The awards keep rolling in for Straight Outta Compton. According to Variety, the biopic which chronicled N.W.A’s rise to fame and the trials and tribulations that the group experienced once they reached the top, has been selected as Best Picture by the African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA).

In addition to the top honor, the movie also won Best Ensemble Cast while its Jason Mitchell nabbed a trophy for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Eazy-E.

The motion picture, which recently became one of the top-grossing movies directed by an African American, won’t be alone in racking up the accolades when the awards are handed out in February.

Newly-released Creed received three awards including Breakout Performance for Michael B. Jordan, Will Smith won Best Actor for his work in Concussion (out Dec. 25), and Dope, Rick Famuyiwa’s production, won for Best Screenplay.

F. Gary Gray’s Straight Outta Compton has become one of the top-grossing films ever directed by an African American as it’s on pace to make $200 million worldwide.

The motion picture is currently in third place where it joins the company of Peter Ramsey’s 2012 release of Rise of the Guardians with $306 million and the John Singleton-directed 2 Fast 2 Furious which earned $236 million worldwide in 2003.

Keenen Ivory Wayans’ Scary Movie (2000) and the Tim Story-directed Fantastic Four (2005) round out the top five with $157 million and $154 million, respectively.

Following the recent news of Suge Knight’s lawyer speaking out against the Straight Outta Compton film, another person involved with the group’s storyline is sharing the same sentiments.

N.W.A’s former manager, Jerry Heller, spoke with the Los Angeles Times on his thoughts about the F. Gary Gray-directed biopic.

“Well, my only comment so far is that I think it’s inappropriate for me to comment on a movie that I haven’t seen,” Heller said. “I did see it on Saturday, and I’m still not willing to comment right now on that movie because I think sooner or later it may be part of an ongoing litigation.”

Heller, who was portrayed by world-renowned actor Paul Giamatti, became known for the long-lasting scandal that involved him stealing money from the historic rap group. In an interview with TMZ earlier this month, Heller, 74, provided his opinion on the critically-acclaimed movie, stating, “Until I see the film, I’m not going to comment on it. I’ll be there Thursday night in the first row with at least two of my lawyers, and we’ll see if I like it or not.”

Eazy E’s daughter has already disputed how the hit biopic Straight Outta Compton portrayed her late dad. In particular, she questioned the scene in which Suge Knight beats E up.

In an exclusive interview with AllHipHop, Master P, the Nola mogul offered his opinion of the “Straight Outta Compton” movie, homing in on the Eazy-E character.

The mogul said that the movie could have done better with Eazy-E, who was the only member of N.W.A. with a criminal records and gang affiliation early on.

N.W.A’s recent film Straight Outta Compton opened viewers’ eyes into the game-changing group’s rise to hall of fame status.

But one of the more emotional moments within the F. Gary Gray-directed reel, Eazy-E’s untimely death, reignited a sentimental chord within those who’ve watched the movie.

Now, Yung Eazy, the Compton native’s son, is speaking out on his father’s passing. In an extended Instagram post, Yung Eazy claims Suge Knight orchestrated his father’s death.

“I’ve been known my pops was killed. His death never added up 2 what ppl have always said maybe they think we’re idiots blind to the truth idk….but 4 u new fans, youngsters & ppl who just don’t know much notice in#StraightOuttaCompton Eazy did not get sick until after the studio incident with suge and look how he acknowledged & admits on this interview with #JimmyKimmel injecting ppl instead of shooting them is a new thing that’s done,” he said. “Oh n let’s not touch the topic on Ice Cube naming his album “Lethal Injection.”

The N.W.A. bio pic 'Straight Outta Compton' has not only been shattering records in the box office but is also the cause of records being broken on the Billboard charts.

For the first time in N.W.A history, the self-proclaimed “World’s Most Dangerous Group” has reached a Top 100 Billboard chart spot. Following the success of the Straight Outta Compton biopic, the group’s 1988 hit, which shares the same name, hit No.38 as a Hot Shot Debut on the Billboard charts.

Massive hip-hop impact and legend aside, the side-eyes towards Dr. Dre have only intensified since the box-office breaking release of Straight Outta Compton.

His storied past of violence against women has cast a dark shadow over his legacy, especially his violent encounter with Fox journalist, Dee Barnes.

In a recent essay with Gawker entitled, “Here’s What’s Missing From Straight Outta Compton: Me And The Other Women Dr. Dre Beat Up,” she shined a light on the reportedly abusive habits that Dr. Dre left out of Straight Outta Compton altogether.

Today, the New York Times released a piece containing an apologetic statement from Dr. Dre reiterating (albeit, vaguely) his deep regret for the past.

There were many fans of N.W.A’s blockbuster movie Straight Outta Compton, but one person isn’t singing the riveting film’s praises.

According to Suge Knight’s lawyer, Thomas Mesereau, the former Death Row Records leader would cringe at his portrayal, played by R. Marcos Taylor, on the silver screen. “I’m sure he wouldn’t like it because a lot of it is exaggerated and silly and ridiculous,” Mesereau said in an interview with TheWrap.

Knight obviously can’t view the film since he’s currently in jail for attempted murder and murder charges, but his attorney continued to fight for his client’s persona, stating the movie failed to highlight the positive impact Knight has had on people.

Dr. Dre and Ice Cube have recently filed a motion requesting to be removed from a lawsuit that stems from the hit-and-run death of a Compton man named Terry Carter. Carter was killed in January by infamous rap businessman Suge Knight.

Carter’s widow Lilian stated that the rappers should be held accountable for her late husband’s death in a lawsuit originally filed in June.

Reportedly, Suge went to the filming of a Straight Outta Compton commercial because he was unhappy on how he was portrayed in the film. Soon after his appearance, a man named Cle “Bone” Sloan (who was hired by Universal and Pretty Bird Pictures to recruit gang members as extras) told him he needed to leave the premises, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Suge and Sloan subsequently got into an altercation three miles away at a burger spot—where Suge attempted to run over Sloan but instead hit and killed Carter. The lawsuits states that those who were involved in the film should be held liable for not providing a safe environment and that Cube and Dre were responsible for Sloan’s behavior.

Straight Outta Compton snagged a record-breaking opening weekend by raking in a cool $56.1 million dollars, the best of any R-rated movie released in August. 

But while F. Gary Gray and his standout cast celebrate their theatrical win, the city of Compton can’t flood the theaters to support the film–because there are no theaters in Compton.

CBS Los Angeles pointed out the unfortunate circumstance. According to USC sociology professor Manuel Pastor, the so-far critically-acclaimed N.W.A. biopic is not available to the hometown of the legendary rap group because of its economic standing.

“It’s a low income area, it’s been heavily dis-invested in,” USC professor of sociology Manuel Pastor said. “When you live in a community that doesn’t have that kind of retail, it’s a sign that the community is devalued and people within the community feel devalued.”

#BBB NEWS| “Straight Outta Compton” Tops Box Office Earning $56.1 Million

The NWA biopic, Straight Outta Compton, which chronicles the rise of one of hip-hop’s greatest groups has earned top billing at the box office opening weekend.

According to CNN Money, the F. Gary Gray film earned $56.1 million in theaters, almost doubling the $29 million it cost to make the film.

The film exceeded exceptions and was projected to bring in close to $30 million. The biopic represents the sixth number one opening this year for Universal pictures and the best R-Rated film to debut in August ever.

"Straight Outta Compton" dutifully tells the story of rap supergroup N.W.A. using the standard biopic arc -- dramatic, exciting rise followed by messy, protracted fall and partial redemption. It's overlong and sanitized but succeeds in presenting an important part of contemporary American culture to a mainstream audience.

It's also as topical as today's headlines. A generation ago, the police harrassment that was common in inner-city Los Angeles inspired Ice Cube and the other members of N.W.A. to write incendiary songs about their experiences. Those songs -- most famously "F.T.P." -- sparked a political backlash and a crackdown on what was called gangsta rap. The riots that followed the Rodney King verdict in 1992 came just as N.W.A. had peaked.

What happened to King was an extreme example of what N.W.A. had been rapping about; the kind of police brutality that, according to the movie, they had experienced all their lives. They spoke up about it and established a platform for others to do the same, at some risk and with great rewards for those who survived.
