King’s daughters, Karen Williams and Patty King, filed affidavits in court, accusing their late father’s aides of poisoning him. According to the Associated Press, the attorney for the singer’s estate, Brent Bryson, calls the claims “ridiculous.”
King’s daughters allege that his family was prevented from seeing him in his final days. Primarily cared for by his business manager, LaVerne Toney and personal assistant Myron Johnson, the singer’s estate – worth tens of millions of dollars – has been pointed to as a motive. Toney, who served as King’s power-of-attorney, was named executor of the estate, according to King’s will. Johnson was present at the time of King’s death.
“I believe my father was poisoned and that he was administered foreign substances,” AP reports the court documents read, according to King’s daughter’s lawyer. “I believe my father was murdered.”
King, who suffered from diabetes, passed away in his sleep. In the weeks leading up to his death, Williams was denied a motion to take over as her father’s guardian. Three doctors have gathered that he received adequate, round-the-clock care, according to Bryson. An autopsy has been performed, as no indicators of poisoning were present.
Funeral proceedings are scheduled for Wednesday (May 27). His burial will take place on Saturday (May 30).
