Serena Williams beat a battling Garbine Muguruza 6-4 6-4 in the Wimbledon final on Saturday to land her second 'Serena Slam' and secure the 21st Grand Slam title of her career.

After losing a close first set and battling bravely to come back from 5-1 down in the second, the 21-year-old Spaniard was eventually downed after one hour and 23 minutes to leave Williams to receive the acclaim of the Centre Crowd.

At 33 years and 289 days, Serena surpasses Martina Navratilova as the oldest player to win Wimbledon, or any of the other three Grand Slams, in the Open era.

"It feels so good. Garbine played so well. I didn't even know it was over because she was fighting so hard at the end. She will be holding this trophy very, very soon. I am happy it was such a great match," said Williams.

Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, announced about a week ago that the Nigerian government was willing to negotiate with the deadly terrorist group, Boko Haram. If we leave aside the problematic of using a foreign platform (BBC Africa) to communicate such a salient national issue, the comment appeared to signpost a new trajectory in the stance of President Muhammadu Buhari, who as presidential candidate discountenanced such overtures. Thanks to Boko Haram, terrorism in Nigeria is now comparable with similar attacks in Afghanistan.

Analysis from the Global Terrorism Database also indicates that terrorism in Nigeria is growing at a faster rate than in Iraq and Pakistan, the two leading countries in global terrorism. A June 2015 Amnesty International report indicated that Boko Haram had claimed 17,000 lives.

These figures are now outdated due to the attacks of the last few weeks.

Consequently, there are many Nigerians with legitimate reservations about negotiating with such an entity. Some have pointed to public pronouncements by Western liberal democratic states such as the US concerning negotiating with terrorists. The statement “we don’t negotiate with terrorists” is popular in that regard. Of course, Western powers do not negotiate with terrorists — in Hollywood movies. In reality, governments have from time immemorial engaged in negotiations with states, non-states, extra-state, extra-legal, and transnational private actors. The statement “we don’t negotiate with terrorists” is therefore a mere manifestation of masculinist braggadocio. It is meant to showcase the “toughness” of states, which are often led by men and provide psychological succor to the citizens. The statement is not meant to be taken literally. A few contemporary examples may suffice.

Reports reaching PREMIUM TIMES say Boko Haram militants have taken over the highway linking Maiduguri and Damaturu, capitals of Borno and Yobe states respectively.

A police officer stationed in one of the villages along the highway, told PREMIUM TIMES that travellers are being asked to return as the terrorists have taken over the road between Benisheik (a town 85km away from Maiduguri) and Ngamdu (35km away from Damaturu).

The officer, who asked that his identity be protected for security reasons, said the terrorists had attacked Ngamdu village and killed 10 persons there.

50 Cent owes Rick Ross’s baby mama Lavonia Leviston at least $6 million. Leviston had sued Fif for leaking a video of her having sex with a man who wasn’t Rick Ross back in 2009.

While Fif’s intention was to mock “Officer Ricky,” whom he was feuding with, Leviston claimed the leak left her emotional destroyed.

Yesterday, a New York jury agreed and awarded Leviston $3.5 million for using her image without her permission, and $2.5 million for intentional infliction of emotional distress.

A suspected Boko Haram member who was dressed as a woman was caught in Yola, Adamawa state today, July 10.

It was gathered that after he was tortured, he confessed to being a member of the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram.

The suspect said there are 29 other members of the group in Yola presently and that he was on his way to meet them when he was caught.

This wouldn’t be the first time a member of the terrorist group will be caught dressed as a woman.

The Miami Heat are going to be one of the most entertaining and better teams in the East. They will start three potential All-Stars (Goran Dragic, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh), and they are putting a nice bench behind them.

That now includes Amare Stoudemire, who officially signed with the team on Friday. It is a one-year, veteran minimum deal at $1.5 million.

Civil Rights activists are now calling for the removal of Bill Cosby’s star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Many activist remained neutral during the public mudslinging, until the reveal of a 2005 deposition in which the once beloved, now disgraced comedian, admitted under oath to obtaining Quaaludes with the intent of giving to women he wanted to have sex with.

“Cosby to black America is an icon, but once an icon figure betrays the trust of the community, we have to withdraw our support and condemn their actions,” said Najee Ali, who was among those calling for the star’s removal. “If they don’t remove that star, we can call it the ‘Walk of Shame.’ “

While activists are calling for Cosby’s removal, Chamber of Commerce president Leron Gubler, said they’ve never removed a star in the past and have no plans to do so now.

#BBB NEWS| 2 Billion Excess Crude Cashout: Okonjo-Iweala Shifts; Says Jonathan Unilaterally Approved Withdrawal

The immediate past Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has shifted the blame on former President Goodluck Jonathan over the controversial withdrawal of $2bn from the excess crude revenue account (ECA) in December 2014.

“Payments made were used for paying for petroleum subsidies for the Nigerian people and were approved by Mr. President,” the former minister said on Tuesday through her media adviser, Paul Nwabuikwu. “Therefore, there is no question of mismanaging any resources here.”

Following an allegation by the Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole, that she unilaterally approved the withdrawal of the money from the $4.1 bn left in the ECA “without authorization”, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala had dismissed it as “false, malicious and totally without foundation.”

“We want to state categorically that no unauthorized expenditure from the ECA was made under Okonjo-Iweala’s watch in the Finance Ministry,” Mr. Nwabuikwu said in a statement.

A federal court has ordered a former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, and his two sons, Aminu and Mustapha, accused of fraud, remanded in prison custody in Kano till September 28.

The former Governor was arraigned on Thursday alongside his children for receiving N1.35 billion kickback from a government contractor.

The money was allegedly paid into accounts controlled by the Governor and his sons.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is accusing the four suspects of money laundering, amongst other charges.

They were due for arraignment Wednesday, but the court appearance was rescheduled to Thursday (today).

Meek Mill’s Dreams Worth More Than Money topped the charts this week, selling 246k units since it was released last Sunday night.

Nigeria’s first indigenous fully integrated green-field electricity project, the Aba Integrated Power Project (Aba IPP), scheduled for commissioning in November, recently in Lagos, entered into a new Transaction Implementation Agreement with its sponsors and creditors pursuant to which Afrigem Integrated Utilities Limited becomes a core investor in the integrated electricity power project.

The agreement signing ceremony which was hosted by Diamond Bank Plc, details the investment of Afrigem in the Aba IPP operating companies, the milestones for the restructuring of the existing debt stock of Geometric Power’s project companies, recapitalization and also, the restructuring of the company.

These are expected to help fast-track the commissioning of the plant to takeoff in November and start the generation and distribution of quality electricity power to the residents of Aba metropolis.

#BBB NEWS| Nigeria’s Anti-Drug Agency Seizes $2.1 Million

Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have seized $2.1 million from suspected money launderers at the local wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, Nigeria.

In a statement released today, the NDLEA disclosed that its anti-narcotic agents intercepted and seized $2,198,900 “on the grounds of suspected money laundering at the local wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport (MMA2) Lagos.”

The agency also arrested 46-year-old Ibiteye John Bamidele in connection with the seized funds. The NDLEA statement, signed by its head of public affairs, Ofoyeju Mitchell, revealed that the suspect was arrested as he was about to fly to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The Nigerian military reported its troops have arrested the mastermind of last Sunday’s bombing in Jos, Plateau State, and Tuesday’s suicide bomb in Zaria, Kaduna State.

In Jos, a coordinated bomb and gun attack on worshippers at Yan Taya mosque, Dillimi Street, off Bauchi Road, Jos killed 48 people, injuring several others. In Zaria, 26 were killed in a suicide attack on the secretariat building in Sabon Gari Local Government Area during a verification exercise.

The press release from Army Spokesman Colonel SK Usman said that “the arrested terrorists are currently being processed for further action and would soon face the full wrath of the law.”

Dylann Roof, the man responsible for the shooting at Charleston, S.C.’s Emanuel AME Church that left nine people dead, has been indicted on new charges.

After rounding up nine counts of murder, 21-year-old Roof was also charged with three counts of attempted murder, accounting for the three survivors of the heinous attack, according to the Associated Press.

U.S. Justice Department officials have not specified whether Roof’s act of violence will be treated as a hate crime, though a majority believe the legal parameters are in line to pursue the charge.

On a website registered in Roof’s name, a lengthy racist declaration was revealed along with photos of Roof holding guns, Confederate flags and burning American flags.

A statue of Bill Cosby has been removed from Disney’s Hollywood Studio theme park in Orlando.

The controversy surrounding the once-beloved actor and comedian resurfaced this week with the unearthing of a 2005 deposition in which Cosby admitted to procuring Quaaludes to give to women he intended on having sex with. Furthering the claims made by dozens of women, Cosby is back under fire for a slew of rape allegations.

The statue was on display at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame Plaza. It was reportedly removed after the park closed on Tuesday night (June 7).

The former governors of Imo and Adamawa States, Ikedi Ohakim and Murtala Nyako, and Mr. Nyako’s son, Abdul-aziz, have been arrested by officials of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission.

The former governors, and Abdul-aziz Nyako, who is a senator now, are to be arraigned at a Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday on different cases of alleged corruption.

A source at the EFCC had in June told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Ohakim had questions to answer concerning a number of properties allegedly traced to him.

The commission said in a statement that the two Nyakos were wanted on allegations of stealing, abuse of office and money laundering.

A former Minister of Aviation, and spokesperson of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign organization, Femi Fani-Kayode, has said that Nigerians asked for the recent upsurge in Boko Haram attacks by refusing to renew Mr. Jonathan’s mandate, instead voting in Muhammadu Buhari as president.

Mr. Fani-Kayode said Mr. Buhari had always been sympathetic to Boko Haram.

“Anyone that honestly believed that a man who secretly shares the same vision and core principles of Boko Haram and who spent many years defending them can do anything but give them a free hand when he comes to power is living in cuckoo land,” he said in a Facebook post Tuesday.

The remark was posted first on Monday, but was deleted before being re-posted on Tuesday.

Nigeria has in the last two weeks witnessed an escalation of Boko Haram’s bloody campaign, with several suicide bomb and gun attacks targeting places of worship, communities and public places, killing hundreds of people.

#BBB NEWS| Presidential Relief Package: Excess Crude Account Still Intact - Presidency

Reports in sections of the media today that funds will be drawn from the Excess Crude Account for the relief package approved by President Muhammadu Buhari for states and local governments, are incorrect.

For the purpose of greater clarity on the matter, the measures approved by President Buhari to deal with the problem of unpaid public sector salaries in many states are as follows:

*The sharing of the $2.1 Billion dividend paid to the Federation Account by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Company (NLNG);

* A Central Bank-packaged special intervention fund that will offer financing to the states, ranging from N250 Billion to N300 Billion. This will be a soft loan available to states for the purposes of paying backlog of salaries; and

Dwyane Wade just took a thirty minute vacation from his vacation to handle a quick “Q&A” session on twitter. Wade responded to all types of questions, some being serious and some being hilarious.

British pop star Ed Sheeran is keeping busy. During a recent interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1, the ginger-haired crooner revealed that he has a potential collabo with Kanye West and The Weeknd on his hands.

The two Brits talked many a topic, particularly partying. Sheeran shared a story about how he met The Weeknd at a party in Toronto and how the T-Dot singer wanted Ed to write a song with him the next day.

“In my head I’m like, ‘The Weeknd doesn’t want to write a song!’ The Weeknd doesn’t want to work with anyone,” said Sheeran. “He’s got one feature on his album, which is Kanye West. He doesn’t want to do that.”

If keeping up with the Kardashians is your 9-to-5, whispers of Kourtney dumping Scott Disick isn’t new news.

Despite seeing their rocky relationship play out on flat screens thanks to the family’s E! series, TMZ is now reporting that the eldest Kardash is breaking up with her baby daddy.

The reign of terror by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect continued Tuesday with a deadly bomb blast killing at least 20 people in the Sabon Gari area of Zaria town, Kaduna state.

The governor of the state, Nasir El-Rufai, confirmed the casualty figure via his Twitter handle.

The attack came hours after a suicide bomb attack at a Mosque in Kano on Monday.

Similar explosions killed 44 people in Jos, Plateau State, on Sunday, the same day six persons were killed at a church in Potiskum, Yobe State, by a suicide bomber.

The World Boxing Organization announced due to Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather’s inability to pay a $200,000 sanctioning fee to the WBO by Friday and renounce other belts he’s won, he was stripped of his welterweight title.

“The WBO World Championship Committee is allowed no other alternative but to cease to recognize Mr. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. as the WBO Welterweight Champion of the World and vacate his title, for failing to comply with our WBO Regulations of World Championship Contests,” the organization said in a statement.

After winning the title against Manny Pacquiao back in May, the 38 year old said “I’m world champion at two different weight classes right now. … It’s time to let other fighters fight for the belt,” which is an issue the WBO had. According the organization’s rules, a fighter cannot hold titles in different weight classes in different organizations.

In a 2005 deposition made public Monday, (July 6) comedian Bill Cosby, under oath, admitted to drugging multiple women with the intent of having sex with them.

According to reports, the once-beloved actor acquired the sedative quaaludes and gave it to to at least one woman and “other people.”

The sealed documents became public after the Associated Press went to court to push for the release of the deposition in a sexual abuse lawsuit filed by Andrea Constand, a former Temple University employee. Cosby settled the lawsuit in 2006 under confidential terms.

The 77 year old’s sexual misconduct allegations first came to light after comedian Hannibal Burress called Cosby a rapist during a Philadelphia stand up in October 2014. Since then, more than two dozen women, including super model Beverly Johnson, all have came forward accusing Cosby of using drugs with the intent to rape.

Stephen Keshi, who was sacked on Saturday as head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, is threatening to file a case against the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) at the FIFA Court of Arbitration.

Mr. Keshi was fired over allegations that he applied for a job to coach Les Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire. The former Super Eagles coach denied seeking the Ivorian coaching job, according to a report prepared by the NFF disciplinary committee following a meeting attended by Mr. Keshi before his sack.

However, the NFF insisted that the embattled coach did not present enough strong evidence to prove his innocence.

Subsequently, the NFF considered the coach’s alleged application for the coaching job in Cote d’Ivoire as a breach of contract. The Nigerian football governing body therefore felt justified in removing Mr. Keshi, who led Nigeria to the AFCON Cup, without giving him any financial compensation.

Senate President Bukola Saraki declared during a meeting with anti-corruption agencies that he is committed to “a zero tolerance” policy on corruption in the National Assembly.

These statements were made during a July 6th meeting with the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offense Commission (ICPC), Mr. Ekpo Nta, and representatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

The meeting was held at the National Assembly and was called to brief Senate President Saraki and other Senators on the activities of the anti-corruption agencies.

A top Saraki aide repeated these commitments during a phone interview; he said “Senator Saraki is committed to having a zero tolerance for all corruption in the National Assembly.” He added, “he [Senator Saraki] will work with the Buhari administration to fight corruption.”

In his resolve to end the lingering crisis of unpaid workers' salaries in the country, especially in several beleaguered states, President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday approved a comprehensive three-pronged relief package.

These are:

* The sharing of about $2.1B in fresh allocation between the states and the federal government. The money will come from recent LNG proceeds to the federation account.

* A Central Bank of Nigeria-packaged special intervention fund that will offer financing to the states, ranging from between N250B to N300B. This would be a soft loan available to them to access for the purposes of paying the backlog of salaries.

*A debt relief program designed by the Debt Management Office (DMO), to help states restructure their commercial loans currently estimated at N660B and extend the life span of such loans while reducing their debt-servicing expenditures.

#BBB NEWS| Suicide Bomber Kills Six Inside Redeemed Church

A suicide bomber on Sunday found his way into the City of David Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Potiskum, Yobe State, and detonated an explosive device which led to the death of five worshippers and the bomber. One other person also sustained injuries.

A source said the dead bomber, suspected to be a member of the terrorist Islamic sect, Boko Haram, entered the church auditorium during Sunday service with the Improvised Explosive Device strapped to his body.

The source said the bomber headed for the altar as soon as he entered the church.

Four members of the robbery gang that raided two banks in Ikorodu, Lagos State, on 24 June, have been arrested, the police claimed.

The gang had robbed First Bank and a new generation at Ogolonto and carted away huge sums of money.

The police in Lagos in the aftermath of the public outrage triggered by the robbery and the manner of escape via the Ikorodu lagoon, offered a N5 million reward for information.

I think, Nigerians, having assessed the antecedents and profile of Muhammadu Buhari and Professor Yemi Osinbajo, I voted for the duo based on the conviction that the two can bring about a formidable change. Nigeria had been held captive. It had been held down by these two evils: indiscipline and corruption.

Nigerians are expectant; they are expecting immediate resolution and change from the current disastrous existence in the country. That is why I will not be happy that even before the government takes off, a fundamental subversion that could totally derail the APC’s promise to Nigerians had taken place. Some of us who laid down our lives in the campaign for the restoration of democracy to our country during the military era have a reason to be worried. Having gone through an agonising period – in the violence unleashed on us by General Sani Abacha (a late Head of State) some of us lost our sweat, blood and liberty; and some people had to abandon their comfort and had to go away as foreigners (on exile) as Abacha remained in power – we thought that if we succeeded in sending the military back to the barracks, we would have a government in office under which a greater majority of Nigerians will enjoy better living conditions.

The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, on Sunday alleged that a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had decided to offer support for Senator Smart Adeyemi, who is currently challenging his electoral victory at the Court of Appeal.

Melaye, an APC senator, told journalists in Abuja that Tinubu had contacted the immediate-past Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), to take over the legal battle on behalf of Adeyemi.

He also said that Adeyemi, on the request of Tinubu, had forwarded details of the suit to Adoke, asking him to look for a judge in the Court of Appeal that would offer assistance.

But Tinubu, in his reaction, had asked Melaye to look elsewhere for people to blackmail.

Tinubu, who spoke through his Media Adviser, Mr. Sunday Dare, said it was nothing but a “kitchen of malicious lies.”

Raymond Omachi, the acting chairman of Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC) has stated that the past administration led by Goodluck Jonathan and its Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala mismanaged funds in the Excess Crude Account (ECA).

Although Omachi did not mention names, he frowned at the practice of the federal government to pay subsidy from the ECA or to share to states from the ECA when available funds are not adequate to meet revenue projections.

He said that the ECA was established in 2004 to protect planned budget against shortfalls due to volatile crude oil prices, but that was not how the funds from the account were spent today.

“If the ECA had been properly managed, in accordance with the FRC act, the country will not have been embroiled in the liquidity crisis being presently experienced,” he said on Sunday in Abuja during an interactive session with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
