#BBB NEWS| A Letter To Muhammadu Buhari: And Now What? By Charles Odimgbe

My dear President-elect, with the election behind you and your emergence as the President Elect of Nigeria, please listen to these words that I speak as you ready yourself to form your cabinet and tackle the daunting multiple challenges facing Nigeria. Before anything else, please reach out to your predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, and the PDP in a very public way to assuage their fears and ask for their assistance and support as you go about the business of setting up shop in Aso Rock.

Foremost, remember you are now the first “Nigerian” happens to be a Muslim. You should no longer regard yourself as simply a Northerner, an Hausa-Fulani, or a general. You are indeed a Nigerian and the Number 1 Citizen of the country. Just as the disciples of Jesus forsook their relatives and followed Jesus, you must forsake yours to lead Nigeria. We know where you come from, who your friends are, what faith you profess, but all that has to be kept aside until you become a regular citizen again.

To effectively govern a diverse nation such as Nigeria, you must be a Nigerian every day. As the country’s president, you must separate Buhari the campaigner from Buhari the President and remain impartial and fair when it comes to matters of religion and ethnicity in this country.

#BBB NEWS| Why I Reached Out To Igbo Voters – Ambode, Lagos APC Governorship Candidate

In this interview with DAYO OKETOLA and GBENRO ADEOYE, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, said he is more experienced than the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, to govern the state

Have you recovered from the shock of the recent election in Lagos State, which saw a close contest between your party, All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party?

I’m not sure it’s appropriate to use the word — shock. Let’s go back in history: in the 2011 elections, the President and PDP recorded 1.3 million votes in Lagos State. So for PDP to have recorded about 670,000 votes in 2015 actually means that it lost over 800,000 votes when you compare the two elections. That’s the way to look at it. Fewer people actually voted for him in Lagos State this time around. That’s the way I want to look at it. Maybe the other part is to say that the margin between APC and PDP was not much. We looked at the conduct of elections in relation to how the Independent National Electoral Commission performed. In Lagos State, you will see that in most areas, a whole lot of Lagos residents were disenfranchised due to no fault of theirs which could explain the number that came out to vote eventually. Also note that there were apprehensions before the last election; the whole place was militarised and everyone felt there would be violence and that it would not be safe. That could also account for why a whole lot of people kept away from the streets and did not come out to vote. I believe strongly that we will see a different pattern in the governorship elections.

#BBB NEWS| Open Letter To President-Elect Muhammadu Buhari

Your Excellency Sir: Let me quickly jump in front of the oncoming bandwagon in offering my congratulations. I know you do not have too much time for niceties because much has been left on the Augean Stables for you to clean up. Let me be one of the first to offer my two kobo on how you should begin the art (for, in Nigeria, it is indeed an art) of governing us for the next four years. My advice is neither in chronological order nor even in any order of preference. But most of it stems from lessons learned in the huge fall from grace to grass of your immediate predecessor, Mr. Goodluck Jonathan.

(Declaration of Assets) Even before your official swearing in ceremony scheduled for May 29th, go ahead and declare your assets as you promised. Do it publicly. In fact, find some money and buy space in a few national dailies and online media outlets and declare your assets. I am sure your Vice, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, will follow suit. Nigerians know both of you are not stupendously rich, so no need to worry about having to explain how you came about your assets. Then go ahead and make it (in private, of course) a requirement for all your ministerial, judicial and heads of MDA appointees, to also declare their assets.

Soyinka, in an interview with The Guardian UK on Sunday, was quoted as saying, “We’re talking about a very positive response by the public in terms of determination to register and vote but, you know, this has been one of the most vicious, unprincipled, vulgar and violent exercises I have ever witnessed.

“I just hope we won’t go down as being the incorrigible giant of Africa.”

According to Soyinka, the stakes appear to be so high that all scruples have been set aside and it’s very distressing to compare this election with that of 1993, which was one of the most orderly, civilised and resolute elections the country ever had.
