The 19 All Progressives Congress lawmakers in Ekiti State House of Assembly have urged a Federal High Court, Abuja, to establish a contempt charge against Governor Ayodele Fayose for allegedly manipulating its ruling.

They warned that impunity and manipulation of facts of his impeachment case in the media won’t save him.

The lawmakers were reacting to media reports on the ruling of the Federal High Court ‎in Abuja which refused Fayose and seven Peoples Democratic Party lawmakers’ request which sought to bar APC lawmakers from continuing impeachment process against the governor.

Special Adviser to the Speaker Adewale Omirin, Wole Olujobi, said in a statement on Saturday that the APC lawmakers were surprised that the governor and his men could deliberately misrepresent the fact of the ruling to mislead the public.

Nigeria’s First Lady, Patience Jonathan, was conspicuously absent at the 5th and last Presidential Prayer Breakfast Saturday.

Mrs. Jonathan always attended the presidential breakfast prayer which was initiated by her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan.

The first lady, who was vociferous before the March 28 presidential election, has stayed out of spotlight and has not made any public appearance after the president lost the poll.

Anambra State Governor, Willy Obiano, has urged the President-elect, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (retd), to appoint Igbo into prominent positions while forming his cabinet.

He said the forthcoming Buhari’s administration would require the support of all Nigerians irrespective of their party affiliations to success.

Obiano spoke after a closed-door meeting with the President-elect at his private residence in Abuja on Friday.

The governor said he was in Abuja not only to congratulate the President-elect and reassure him of the support of the South-East, but also to plead with him to consider Anambra indigenes for appointments.

Obiano said, “I am also here to reassure him that Anambra and the South-East would support him. I also pleaded with him on some pressing problems that are of importance to the South-East like the second Niger bridge and some of the federal roads.

A former Federal Commissioner for Information, Chief Edwin Clark, has said it is wrong for anyone to think that he would die because President Goodluck Jonathan lost the March 28 presidential election.

Clark, who was one of the supporters of the President, spoke with journalists on Friday in Abuja.

He said some people had been going round with rumours that he collapsed when he heard about the outcome of the presidential election.

It will be recalled that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), defeated Jonathan, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate in the election.

Clark, who said he was travelling to London on Friday night, said he decided to speak with journalists before the rumour mongers would go to the market again and say that he had been flown abroad in air ambulance.

President Goodluck Jonathan and the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Friday met behind closed-door at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting, which lasted about 30minutes, started at about 3.00pm with the arrival of the President-elect and members of his entourage.

A few minutes before his arrival, Jonathan trekked the about 100metres distance from his office to the new Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa where the meeting was held.

He was accompanied by his Principal Secretary, Ambassador Hassan Tukur, and a few security aides.

Buhari, decked in a white agbada, was accompanied by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; another chieftain of the party, Abdulrahman Dambazau, and a couple of aides.

Nas has been spotted in Barbados with Vanessa Bronfman, daughter of billionaire music industry executive and Seagram’s heir Edgar Bronfman Jr.

Sources told the New York Post that Nas is “totally smitten” with Vanessa.

However, Nas’s rep is playing it cool, saying the pair are just “friends” whose presence together on the island was a “complete coincidence.”

There isn’t much information about Vanessa, although she has two fairly well known siblings. Her older brother, who goes by Ben Brewer, is the baby daddy to M.I.A.’s notoriously named son Ikhyd. Her younger sister is fashionista and celebrity DJ Hannah Bronfman.

Tyler Perry, best known for his theater stage plays featuring Madea, the southern, gun-toting firecracker grandmother, is returning back to the big screen, but this time, as a lead character.

Perry will play Baxter Stockman in Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, the scientist who’s responsible for creating the Mousers who made his debut in the original “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” comic book and later appeared in the 2003 and 2012 animated TV series.

The character was briefly portrayed by Kelvin Todd Freeman in the 2014 film.

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Thursday said countries across the African continent are happy over the outcome of the presidential election in Nigeria, which saw the defeat of incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.

Mr. Obasanjo said his checks in a number of African countries suggested they were as happy over the result of the election as majority of Nigerians are.

He referred to President Goodluck Jonathan as a moving train who was providentially stopped from collapsing Nigeria.

“I have visited six countries since the election, they are as happy about the results as we are in Nigeria. It is good not only for Nigeria, it is good for Africa and I believe it is good for the world.”

Mr. Obasanjo, who led the African Union Observation Mission to the April 2015 General Election in Sudan, spoke on Thursday at a Washington DC event.

African civil society organizations gathered in a conference in Maputo, from April 21-23 to build solidarity for climate justice and provide peoples solutions for the climate crisis. The conference, “Seeding Climate Justice” has brought together more than 135 people from movements such as La Via Campesina, Friends of the Earth Africa, the Rural Women’s Assembly, World March of Women, WoMining as well as people from local organisations from Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa, Botswana, Nigeria and Kenya.

An embryonic twin has been found inside a woman's brain while she was having surgery for a suspected tumour.

Doctors discovered the twin, known medically as a 'teratoma', complete with bone, hair and teeth, inside the brain of Yamini Karanam, 26.

Yamini sought medical help last September when she began to struggle with conversations and reading.

"If a couple of people were talking in the room, I wouldn't understand what was happening," Yamini told NBC Los Angeles.

"I just didn't imagine any of this."

President Goodluck Jonathan’s loss in the March 28 presidential election has started taking its toll on his wife, Patience.

Arrangements had been concluded for her to quit her position as the President of the African Ladies Peace Mission, two months before the expiration of her tenure.

The mission comprises of wives of Presidents of all African countries.

Mrs. Jonathan was elected the mission’s President at its seventh summit held in Abuja in July 2012 and her tenure would have expired in July 2015 when a new president would have been elected.

But because she will cease to be Nigeria’s President’s wife from May 29 when her husband will hand over power to the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari , Mrs. Jonathan had summoned an emergency summit of the mission for May 15 for the purpose of electing her successor.

The Minister of Petroleum Resources Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, on Wednesday disclosed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has started refunding the $1.48bn unremitted fund into the Federation Account as recommended by an audit firm, PriceWaterHouse Coopers.

She however did not disclose how much has for far been refunded by the corporation.

She also denied reports that she was seeking the assistance of some highly-placed persons in order to escape prosecution for alleged corruption from the incoming administration of the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari.

Alison-Madueke spoke with State House correspondents at the end of the weekly meeting of Federal Executive Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

It will be recalled the Federation Account Allocation Committee had on Monday night constituted a committee to find out the reasons for the delay in the refund of the sum.

The governor of Ekiti State Ayodele Fayose has announced that he will be reporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU) due to their alleged reign of impunity in Ekiti State. He also said in a public statement that the threat from the APC is making Ekiti State ungovernable.

Governor Fayose has been confronted with political unrest in Ekiti State, with outgoing members of the APC making last minute attempts to impeach him for his involvement with rigging the presidential, gubernatorial, and State elections. APC leaders have also stated that he has wrongfully used the military and State Security Services to intimidate Ekiti citizens and voters.

Ayodele Fayose stated that all of Nigeria watched him defeat an incumbent governor in all 16 Local Government Areas, and that wrongful attempts to prevent him from governing are being made by APC before May 29th. May 29th marks the day when the APC will lose its majority seats in the Ekiti State Assembly.

The South African Consul General in Nigeria, Sam Monaisa, has announced that the South African Consulate in Nigeria will close operations until Thursday.

The decision was made in response to a combination of threats from social media and anti-xenophobia protests by Nigerians.

After years of disagreements it seemed like Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao’s camps were finally able to hash out all the details to make the mega fight happen but it turns out that’s not true. The two sides are still not in agreement and that’s why the contract hasn’t been signed and the fight is less than two weeks away!

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told ESPN.com on Tuesday that he wasn’t signing the contract that he received a draft of on April 15 because it wasn’t what he agreed to when the MGM, Mayweather Promotions and he signed the term sheet a couple months ago.

The Federal Government on Wednesday changed its mind on the earlier plan for President Goodluck Jonathan to formally handover power to the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) on May 28 as against the May 29 Democracy Day.

Minister of Information, Senator Patricia Akwashiki, had last week said Jonathan intended to have the formal handing over done at a dinner on May 28 so that the administration can reserve May 29 for the incoming government.

That announcement generated controversy with some prominent lawyers arguing that the plan would lead to a vacuum in the leadership of the country till when Buhari is inaugurated 24 hours after the handing over.

But while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by Jonathan on Wednesday, Akwashiki recanted.

Plaintiffs in the two of the three pending suits challenging the eligibility of the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to contest in the March 28, 2015, presidential election have been withdrawn.

Justice Adeniyi Ademola who is presiding over the matters at the Federal High Court in Abuja subsequently struck out the matter after the plaintiffs indicated their intention to withdraw the suits on Wednesday.

Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) who is representing one of the plaintiffs, told the judge on Wednesday that his client decided to withdraw his suit to afford the incoming government time to focus on the “enormous task” of governance.

When the second case which was filed by Max Ozoaka was called, his lawyer, Dr. Chike Amobi, also adduced similar grounds for withdrawing the suit.

The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has urged the National Human Rights Commission and the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Holland, to prosecute Governor Ayodele Fayose.

The party accused the governor of making inciting broadcast on the state radio and television by urging his supporters into “an act of rage and violence” to attack the 19 APC lawmakers in the Ekiti State House of Assembly thus preventing the lawmakers from performing their constitutional duties.

The APC said the statement by Fayose had threatened the peace of the state in the past few days.

But the governor dismissed the call by the APC as coming from a group of people that lacked decorum.

The APC Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, in a statement on Tuesday, said the call to the ICC and NHRC became imperative because of the death of one person recorded in Efon Alaaye and the near collapse of the peace after the governor’s live broadcast.

The national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has rejected the praises showered on him by Ogun-East senator-elect, Buruji Kashamu.

Kashamu, who is the Chairman of the Organisation and Mobilisation Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party in the South-West, had last week, described Tinubu as his role model and the architect of modern Nigeria.

However, Tinubu, in a statement by his media adviser, Mr. Sunday Dare, described Kashamu as a pretender.

The former governor of Lagos State said there was no basis for comparison between himself and Kashamu, adding that he felt insulted by the open letter addressed to him by Kashamu.

He said, “The days of false adulation are gone in Nigerian politics. Fake praise singers like Kashamu will find that their particular craft is no longer in vogue. During this election cycle, their practice has dramatically turned from the way things are to how things used to be.

“Like any black man in America, I was disconnected from myself and from my family and that’s why I’m here in Nigeria, to reconnect with my family. I’ve been disconnected for a long time, so more importantly than the music that’s the main reason why I’m here. The music is secondary.”

On being influenced by Fela:“

“I grew up with my Mom playing Fela. Of course like nowadays I’ve heard of the Don Jazzys, the Ice Prince, the Wizkids, but when Nigeria pops into my mind, the first thing that pops into my mind is Fela which is a beautiful thing to pop into anybody’s mind. Like I said, I’m back home. The music is secondary, but I’m here to connect. Primarily, or I would say, specifically on behalf of Roc Nation, bridge building. But generally just bridge building between the black people in America and back here. It could be Don Jazzy or it could just be a guy in the basement somewhere on the mainland. I’m willing to work with whoever’s available to work.”

One statement that riles the Yoruba is that Lagos is a no man’s land, which comes mainly from the Igbo residents in the city. The impression that statement gives them is that Lagos is a land that nobody owns. They see it as an attempt to take away what belongs to them. According to Oxford Dictionaries, “no man’s land” means “disputed ground between the front lines or trenches of two opposing armies” or “a piece of unowned land or wasteland.”

But Lagos State is someone’s land. Without going into the history of Lagos, one knows that there are traditional institutions and rites in Lagos that only the “sons of the soil” can participate in. For example, Lagos communities have traditional rulers called baale or oba: only sons of the soil of the respective communities can aspire to such positions.

However, that is not the end of the story. Lagos is a unique state, especially given its status as a former federal capital of Nigeria cum seat of government for 77 years: January 1914 to November 1991. That status has given it a different feel from all other cities in Nigeria. It is not because it is by the sea: Calabar and Port Harcourt are also by the sea, but they are not like Lagos. Contrary to the fallacy spread by some people, Calabar was never the capital of Nigeria. Calabar once served as the seat of government of the Niger Coast Protectorate, Southern Protectorate and Oil River Protectorate. Similarly, neither Lokoja nor Zungeru was ever the capital of Nigeria. They were respectively the capital of the British protectorate of Northern Nigeria.

Hundreds of Nigerian protesters on Monday stormed the offices of South African companies in Abuja and Benin City, Edo State, to protest the ongoing xenophobic attacks on foreigners, especially Nigerians, in South Africa.

In Abuja, the protesters, led by media personality and President of the Berekete Family, Ahmad Isah, marched to the regional headquarters of MTN Nigeria Communications Limited in Maitama, as well as Shoprite and Multichoice, owners of DSTV.

At MTN, the protesters, who carried placards with various inscriptions condemning the attacks on Nigerians and their businesses in South Africa, were joined by Nigerians in the area where the office is located.

One of our correspondents learnt that a senior official of MTN whose identity was not known, addressed the crowd of protesters who wore yellow T-shirts, the traditional colour of the South African telecommunications company.

The Peoples Democratic Party has begun reviewing its performance in the March 28 presidential election with a view to arriving at what caused the defeat of President Goodluck Jonathan.

It was gathered in Abuja on Sunday night   that top members of the party were of the opinion that some of them in the National Working Committee and National Executive Committee, especially those from the North, covertly played roles that contributed to Jonathan’s loss.

A leader of the party said   that such members also connived with the All Progressives Congress to ensure that Jonathan was beaten at the polls.

The source, who asked not to be named,   hinted that any indicted members might be shown the way out of the PDP.

The party leader   said that many   of such members of the party seemed united in their determination   to ensure that Jonathan did not win the election.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday sacked Mr. Suleiman Abba, as the Inspector-General of Police.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President has named a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, as Abba’s replacement in acting capacity.

No reason was given for the President’s decision to relieve Abba of his appointment.

The statement read, “President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has relieved the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba of his appointment and duties with immediate effect.

“President Jonathan has also appointed Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase as Acting Inspector-General of Police, also with immediate effect.

A 19 year old from Queens, New York is facing possible life imprisonment after an altercation with his step-dad about dirty dishes turned fatal.

Nickel McLean from Richmond Hill returned home Sunday (April 19) and got into a heated argument with his step-father, 50 year old David Hightower about washing dishes, Pix11.com reports.

McLean told investigators Hightower threatened to hit him, and then the confrontation escalated. McLean then grabbed a knife and stabbed Hightower multiple times including in the chest, arm and stomach.

Hightower later died from his injuries.

The Senior Special Adviser to the President on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, has said that he stands by his words that the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, is not an electable leader.

An Egyptian court sentenced former president Mohammed Morsi to 20 years in prison on Tuesday in connection with the deaths of protesters during demonstrations against his rule in 2012. Morsi also faces charges in two other trials.

Morsi supporters attacked opposition protesters outside the presidential palace in December 2012, sparking clashes that killed at least 10 people.

Judge Ahmed Youssef dropped the murder charges against Morsi and said the sentence was instead linked to the “show of force” against protesters and unlawful detentions.

The Cairo Criminal Court issued the verdict as Morsi and other defendants in the case – mostly other Muslim Brotherhood leaders – stood in a soundproof glass cage in a makeshift courtroom at Egypt’s national police academy.

Hundred of Nigerians today took to the streets in Abuja, the nation’s capital, to protest the gruesome killing of innocent Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa. The demonstrators also gave the South African authorities a 24-hour ultimatum to end the attacks or risk the shutting down of the country’s embassy in Nigeria as well as businesses owned by South Africans in Nigeria.

The protests, organized by the Advocate For Peoples’ Rights and Justice (APRJ) and 1 Africa Initiative, were held outside South Africa’s embassy located in Abuja’s Central Area. The protesters carried placards that read “We Say No to Killings of Our Brothers,” “Say No To Xenophobia,” “We Are Our Brothers Keepers,” “Mandela Lives and Stood For Unity,” “We Are All Foreigners Somewhere.”

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, APRJ’s national coordinator, Victor Giwa, urged the South African to find a lasting solution to the gruesome killings of Nigerians and other Africans who have become the target of the xenophobic attacks. He warned that South Africa would face the shutting down of its embassy and its citizens’ businesses in Nigeria.

The United States government appears set to sanction Nigeria’s first lady, Patience Jonathan, a former Niger Delta minister, Godsday Orubebe, and the governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shema, and other Nigerians accused of either disrupting the just concluded elections, or instigating violence.

The U.S. said Monday that it will impose visa restrictions on any Nigerian found to have incited violence or interfered with the electoral process.

The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said in a statement that the U.S. will shut its doors on people involved in any form of violence during the polls.

“Anyone found to have incited violence or interfered with electoral processes will be unwelcome in the United States and subject to visa sanctions,” Ms. Thomas-Greenfield said.

Today in Lagos, leading lights in the Nigerian movie industry staged a walk to protest against movie piracy in Nigeria. The walk which started at the Ikeja Under-Bridge ended at the Lagos state House of Assembly in Alausa Ikeja.

New York bound intending passengers on Arik Air have been stranded at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) airport correspondent reports that the intending travelers, numbering no fewer than 100 were stranded at the airport since April 17.

The intending travelers resorted to violent protests, invading the tarmac of the airport and disrupting a scheduled Lagos-Accra flight of Arik Air early on Saturday.

However, the Spokesman of Arik Air, Mr Ola Adebanji, told reporters that the issue had been resolved and that the Accra-bound aircraft later made the trip.

Adebanji explained that the U.S. bound passengers could not depart as scheduled, due to malfunctioning of the browser, fuelling the aircraft.

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said his asking for forgiveness should not be taken for cowardice by his opponents, saying his tenure in office will be determined by God.

He said he took the step to seek a genuine reconciliation with the All Progressives Congress, whose 19 lawmakers in the state House of Assembly were plotting his impeachment.

The governor spoke on Sunday at the thanksgiving service organised for him at the Cathedral Church of Emmanuel, Anglican Communion, Ado Ekiti, to celebrate his electoral victory at the Supreme Court.

Fayose said, “I asked for forgiveness for reconciliation and to pursue genuine peace. Waiving the olive branch does not mean cowardice, it is for peace.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday said there was no truth in a report that he and the Peoples Democratic Party spent N2tn for campaigns ahead of the just-concluded general elections.

He also denied setting up a committee to conduct an audit of how the elections funds were disbursed by party members and state officials.

Jonathan made the clarification in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati.

Abati was reacting to a story of the SUNDAY PUNCH of April 19 titled, “Jonathan demands N2tn election funds refund, audit.”

He described the report as “mischievous, false and embarrassing.”
