#BBB NEWS| Kano State To Introduce Health Scheme For Workers - Umar Ganduje

The Kano State government will soon introduce a proactive contributory health scheme for its workers, the state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has announced.

He said the system would be at variance with the conventional health insurance scheme, taking into cognizance certain imperative sociocultural considerations.

The governor disclosed this while receiving executive members of the state branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in his office, and stated the move would allow Kano State to establish a framework for affordable health care services to workers.

Governor Ganduje also stressed the need for a sustainable housing scheme for Kano workers, assuring that all gray areas relating to the Kano NLC housing project would be looked into with a view to solving them soon. He also stated that the government is looking at the possibility of re-engaging into the Federal Mortgage Housing Scheme for the state workers.

The Federal Government has begun moves to establish special courts to try corruption-related cases as part of the efforts to fight graft in the country.

Saturday PUNCH’s investigations on Friday revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari was opting for a comprehensive onslaught against the problem of corruption in the country.

It was learnt that the President had concluded plans to submit a bill on the planned special anti-corruption courts to the National Assembly.

The PUNCH had on Monday exclusively reported that the Presidency had commenced the process of identifying fearless judges that would be saddled with the responsibility of prosecuting corrupt persons.

It was also gathered that the Federal Government was planning to establish 37 of the Special Courts to try corruption in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and the 36 states of the Federation.

A man who raped a two-year-old girl and murdered her great-grandparents has been jailed for 359 years.

Remorseless Jerry Active, 26, continued to protest his innocence as he was sentenced for his sickening crimes, the Alaska Dispatch News reported.

The Alaska native bludgeoned Touch Chea, aged 71, and his 73-year-old wife Sorn Sreap to death at their Anchorage home in May 2013.

He also raped Sreap and the couple's two-year-old great-granddaughter in a random attack which police described as one of the "worst thing they had ever seen in their lives".

The company says he was supposed to do DAILY social postings for 2 weeks leading up to it — but only did ONE post. Conexts says it was crucial for the event’s success for Rick to reach out to his 13 million followers.

Rick got $55,000 up front, and was scheduled to get another $55k the night of party … however, the event was canceled just a few days before, and they had to issue refunds.

David Parradang, head of the Nigeria Immigration Service, has been suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari effective Friday.

The deputy comptroller general, Martin Abeshi, will take over while Mr. Parradang is on suspension, according to the News Agency of Nigeria and Premium Times.

While no immediate reason was cited, the suspension comes just two days after Vanguard reported that President Buhari has ordered an investigation into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The investigation concerns the issuance of a Nigerian visa to Ahmad al-Assir, a notorious cleric supporting Islamic State or ISIS. Al-Assir was arrested last Saturday at Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport, where he was attempting to leave for Nigeria via Cairo. He was in possession of a fake Palestinian passport and a legitimate Nigerian visa.

Apparently worried by the brewing crisis in Guinea Bissau, President, Muhammadu Buhari, has sent former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, as his Special Envoy, to mediate and help find a solution to current challenge of the West African nation.

Following the dismissal of Guinea Bissau’s Prime Minister, Mr Domingos Simoes Pereira and his cabinet by President Jose Mario Vaz, President Buhari had raised concern over the unfolding political situation in the country.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Buhari, Femi Adesina, former President Obasanjo embarked on the first leg of his mission by consulting with the current Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Macky Sall of Senegal in Dakar on Thursday.

Russell Poole, a retired Los Angeles Police Department detective and the lead investigator in the murder of The Notorious B.I.G., has died.

According to the Los Angeles Times, L.A. County sheriff’s deputies at the Homicide Bureau reported that Poole passed away Wednesday morning (Aug. 19) after collapsing during a meeting with detectives. Poole was rushed to a local hospital, where he died.

The former detective worked on Biggie’s case for about a year. During that time, he gained a lot of attention in his department for his theories about the late rapper’s killer. B.I.G., born Christopher Wallace, was slain on March 9, 1997 as he was leaving a Soul Train Music Awards after party.

Former US President Jimmy Carter partook in a press conference Thursday morning, to announce that he would be going into radiation.

The 90-year-old revealed that on August 3, he underwent surgery to remove a small mass from his liver, which he had learned was melanoma, a skin cancer, that spread to his brain.

There were many fans of N.W.A’s blockbuster movie Straight Outta Compton, but one person isn’t singing the riveting film’s praises.

According to Suge Knight’s lawyer, Thomas Mesereau, the former Death Row Records leader would cringe at his portrayal, played by R. Marcos Taylor, on the silver screen. “I’m sure he wouldn’t like it because a lot of it is exaggerated and silly and ridiculous,” Mesereau said in an interview with TheWrap.

Knight obviously can’t view the film since he’s currently in jail for attempted murder and murder charges, but his attorney continued to fight for his client’s persona, stating the movie failed to highlight the positive impact Knight has had on people.

The 28th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards, presented by Target, will take place Sept. 17 at the Historic Warner Theatre in Washington, DC.

Legendary actress, singer and previous Hispanic Heritage Award Honoree Rita Moreno will host the grand affair and perform in it, as well.

“The Hispanic Heritage Foundation is proud to partner with Target to honor yet another inspiring group of Latino leaders with our prestigious Hispanic Heritage Award and we are thrilled to be back on PBS to share our cultural pride, accomplishment and great promise with all of America,” said President and CEO Jose Antonio Tijerino, in a statement.

President Muhammadu Buhari warned Thursday in Abuja that he would not tolerate any irregularities or extortion of money from unemployed Nigerians in the coming recruitment into the police.

A statement by presidential spokesman Femi Adesina said he made the remark during a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Police Affairs and the Police Service Commission (PSC) in the Presidential Villa.

President Buhari expressed sadness about applicants having to pay bribes before being accepted into the police in the past, stressing that such a practice was totally unacceptable.

The President told the officials that those in charge of recruitment and training in the Police must be above board and eschew every form of extortion and underhand dealing.

In the latest of the numerous, ongoing federal appointments, President Muhammadu Buhari has chosen new heads for the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Budget Office of the Federation.

Pending approval by the Senate, Dr. William Babatunde Fowler will be the Executive Chairman of the FIRS. Dr. Fowler has an undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin and an MBA from California State University in the United States.

As the head of the Lagos State Board of Internal Revenue from 2005 to 2014, Dr. Fowler oversaw the state’s internal revenue increase more than fivefold, from an average N3.4 million per month in 2006 to an average N20.5 million per month in 2013.

Dr. Dre and Ice Cube have recently filed a motion requesting to be removed from a lawsuit that stems from the hit-and-run death of a Compton man named Terry Carter. Carter was killed in January by infamous rap businessman Suge Knight.

Carter’s widow Lilian stated that the rappers should be held accountable for her late husband’s death in a lawsuit originally filed in June.

Reportedly, Suge went to the filming of a Straight Outta Compton commercial because he was unhappy on how he was portrayed in the film. Soon after his appearance, a man named Cle “Bone” Sloan (who was hired by Universal and Pretty Bird Pictures to recruit gang members as extras) told him he needed to leave the premises, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Suge and Sloan subsequently got into an altercation three miles away at a burger spot—where Suge attempted to run over Sloan but instead hit and killed Carter. The lawsuits states that those who were involved in the film should be held liable for not providing a safe environment and that Cube and Dre were responsible for Sloan’s behavior.

Drake and J. Cole had lyrical shots fired at them from across the pond. During a performance at XOYO concert in London, England, fellow emcee Jay Electronica had a few words to share concerning Drizzy and Cole.

“You may be the Six God, but I am THE God,” the “Exhibit A” rapper stated. He later turned his attention to the “Born Sinner” lyricist saying, “I’m sorry, but J. Cole don’t got bars like this,” capping off his statements with, “I’m sorry, whoever your favorite rapper is, they all know I’m the god.”

Fans are still awaiting a full-length project from Jay Electronica, but given the recent releases of his singles, they’ll surely be in for a treat that’s worth the wait.

Straight Outta Compton snagged a record-breaking opening weekend by raking in a cool $56.1 million dollars, the best of any R-rated movie released in August.

But while F. Gary Gray and his standout cast celebrate their theatrical win, the city of Compton can’t flood the theaters to support the film–because there are no theaters in Compton.

CBS Los Angeles pointed out the unfortunate circumstance. According to USC sociology professor Manuel Pastor, the so-far critically-acclaimed N.W.A. biopic is not available to the hometown of the legendary rap group because of its economic standing.

“It’s a low income area, it’s been heavily dis-invested in,” USC professor of sociology Manuel Pastor said. “When you live in a community that doesn’t have that kind of retail, it’s a sign that the community is devalued and people within the community feel devalued.”

PDP’s National Vice Chairman (Southsouth zone) Dr. Cairo Ojougboh said he was ready to face the ex-SGF in court to prove his sole ownership of the controversial housing estate.

At a media briefing in his Abuja home late Monday, Ojougboh, reacting to what he described as “the show of shame”, which he said Anyim sponsored against him on Monday, accused the former SGF of acts of desperation “to cling onto his loot and spoils of office without putting into consideration the millions of Nigerians he is depriving of the dividends of democracy”.

Calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to probe transactions relating to the Centenary City, Ojougboh said Anyim persuaded former President Goodluck Jonathan to sign the Centenary City documents without the ex-president reading the contents or consulting his advisers.

Nelson Mandela’s grandson has been arrested for allegedly raping a 15 year old girl in a bathroom stall of a restaurant, according to reports.

Mbuso Mandela is in police custody and will appears in a Johannesburg court on Friday for a bail hearing.

The rape allegedly took place in a Johannesburg suburb on August 7 and was reported a week later on August 14. Mbuso was arrested last Saturday.

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the dissolution of the Executive Management Team of the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

President Buhari has also approved the reconstitution of the management team of the corporation as follows:

For over 16 months, more than 200 academic and non-academic staff of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) have had to function without salaries, simply because the immediate past Governor of the State, Chief (Dr) Godswill Akpabio, had refused, for whatever reason(s), to approve and authorize the release of the 2014 BUDGET OF AKSU.

I am painfully aware that sometime in 2014, when a major University event was in the offing, the State or University authorities placated the affected staff with payment of LEAVE GRANT to most of them. Again, when the 2015 Matriculation was imminent, I heard that the authorities had invited the affected AKSU staff and promised them that within 2-3 weeks, the affected staff will be paid their outstanding salary arrears and other staff would be paid their entitlements.

This pacification (now a deceit) was perpetrated so as to ensure that a salutary atmosphere reigned supreme on the two campuses for Matriculation to take place peaceably. But no sooner had the Matriculation exercise been concluded than the staff were threatened that they will be dismissed if the press should ever hear that they are being owed salary arrears.

What’s pretty dope is the studio still exists to this day, and what’s even more dope is that Eazy-E’s son and Dr. Dre’s son still hang there.

There are indications that the United States government is sending arms to the Nigerian military in its efforts to crush Boko Haram.

Facts that the US might start sending arms to Nigeria came on the heels of the US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle’s revelation in an interview with one of our correspondents that the US government never placed arms embargo on Nigeria.

“There’s been a lot of misunderstanding on this issue before, during and after President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Washington. Let me be clear about a couple of things. One, we had worked very closely with Nigeria on the Leahy Amendment….The second piece of misinformation, which has been bandied about in (newspapers’) headlines, is that the US has lifted its arms embargo on Nigeria. There was never an arms embargo,” Entwistle said.

According to Radio France Internationale, the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency records show that the country’s Department of Defence is set to transfer military material to Nigeria.

Marvel Comics has revealed Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, a new series from writers Amy Reeder and Brandon Montclare and artist Natacha Bustos.

Devil Dinosaur is a Jack Kirby creation from 1978 who enjoyed a short-lived series alongside his friend and partner Moon-boy. He’s currently featured in the Secret Wars series Planet Hulk, alongside a Battleworld version of Steve Rogers.

In this new series, Devil Dinosaur will team up with “pre-teen super genius” Lunella Lafayett, a.k.a. Moon Girl, who was conceived during an early conversation between the series’ creators.

“[Editor Mark Paniccia] and I were talking about how whenever people come in with young kids, or even just for Mark’s own kids, we don’t have that many publications that we can give to people that have that broad reach,” assistant editor Emily Shaw tells EW. “Generally, we’re skewing a little bit older with a lot of our titles and we wanted to create something that adults and kids could really love, like a Pixar feel. That’s where the tone jumped off for us.”

E’dena Hines, the step-granddaughter of Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman, was stabbed to death early Sunday morning (August 16), according to reports.

The 33-year-old was found lying in the street outside of her New York apartment at about 3am where she suffered from multiple stab wounds to her torso.

A 30-year-old man was taken into custody by police at the scene and then taken to Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

In a statement, Freeman reflected on his granddaughter’s life, referring to her as a star.

The world will never know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer,” he said. “Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person.

The NWA biopic, Straight Outta Compton, which chronicles the rise of one of hip-hop’s greatest groups has earned top billing at the box office opening weekend.

According to CNN Money, the F. Gary Gray film earned $56.1 million in theaters, almost doubling the $29 million it cost to make the film.

The film exceeded exceptions and was projected to bring in close to $30 million. The biopic represents the sixth number one opening this year for Universal pictures and the best R-Rated film to debut in August ever.

The N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton is the talk of the weekend and expected to pull in some notable numbers in the box office.

Along with reactions from fans, the families of the legendary group have also gotten a chance to give their take on the on-screen depiction of the story. Daughter of the late Eazy-E, E.B. Wright, was among those to praise the film, especially the acting talent Jason Mitchell, who took on the role of her father.

“He did a phenomenal job,” she told NBC. “I’m so incredibly proud. All my life I’ve been hearing these stories. Jason is everything I imagined [my father] to be … I really felt like I was watching him on the screen.”

Expounding upon her thoughts, Wright took to Twitter to note that a large part of E’s storyline was missing from the project. As a new movie about his beginnings of hip-hop success holds court in theaters this weekend, Dr. Dre is still defending himself against abuse allegations from several women in his past.

Covering Rolling Stone to promote the Straight Outta Compton N.W.A. biopic, the storied West Coast producer was probed about two particular incidents: accounts by his ex-fiancee, singer Michel’le and journalist Dee Barnes.

In a statement released in 1991, Barnes, a former host for Fox’s Pump It Up! noted that Dre “began slamming her face and the right side of her body repeatedly against a wall near the stairway” and “grabbed her from behind by the hair and proceeded to punch her in the back of the head” during a record release party. During an interview with The Breakfast Club back in March, Michel’le said of her time with Dre: “I had five black eyes, I have a cracked rib, I have scars that are just amazing.”

This esteemed organization is taking a look back at two of cinema’s most critically-acclaimed movies.

The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) is set to create an event which will commemorate the 25th anniversary of New Jack City and Boyz N The Hood. Equipped with a concert, the association plans to take an in-depth journey on how hip-hop has changed Hollywood.

“Hip-Hop has had a global impact on pop culture and influenced millions around the world,” says AAFCA President/Co-Founder, Gil Robertson in a press release. “And it’s impact on Hollywood has been a major game changer in front and behind the camera and at the box office.”

N.W.A’s biopic reached a massive mark in its box office history. The F. Gary Gray-directed reel made $24.2 million in ticket sales for its opening weekend (Aug. 14).

According to Billboard, the critically-acclaimed film might also exceed its $50 million estimate.

In an interview with VIBE, the cast spoke on Universal Pictures backing the film’s creative direction. “It’s a testament to people taking a chance. To Universal taking a chance on us,” said Corey Hawkins, the actor who plays Dr. Dre within the reel.

The importance of Straight Outta Compton can also be felt by those who’ve been influenced by the groundbreaking rap group. Ice Cube gave a statement on just that in a sit-down with ABC News.
