The three-time heavyweight victor was also diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the 1980s shortly after he decided to retire from boxing. He swiftly received treatments, but over the years the legend has been admitted to the hospital and bounced right back into better health.
Serving as a blueprint for future boxers in the professional sport, Ali, born Cassius Clay, was both a force in and outside of the ring. He stood behind his beliefs no matter if that meant controversy would follow him. His way with words would either intimidate his opponents or lead listeners to think deeper on a spiritual level.
According to ESPN, Ali’s funeral will be held in his birthplace of Louisville, Ky., in the near future.
