Mr. Buhari’s chief spokesperson, Garba Shehu, announced this in a press release issued on Sunday. He said the meeting would be “aimed at avoiding violence and preserving democracy” in The Gambia.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) chose Mr. Buhari to mediate the negotiations, while immediate past president of Ghana, John Mahama, will serve as co-mediator.
Mr. Shehu stated that the two statesmen will also be tasked with ensuring that President-elect Adama Barrow is safe.
Mr. Buhari and Mr. Mahama will be joined by Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Senegalese President Macky Sall, and Sierra Leonean Vice President Victor Bockarie Foh at the meeting on Monday
ECOWAS leaders have urged outgoing Gambian President Yahya Jammeh to hand over power to Mr. Barrow by January 19 when his mandate expires, but the Gambian leader has yet to show any signs indicating that he will do so.
