First responders attempted to revive Berry but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at 1:26 p.m. local time.
Born in St. Louis in 1926, Berry took up guitar as a teen, and credited swing artist Louis Jordan and Nat King Cole as two of his musical influences. He was also among the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, earned a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and a Kennedy Center honor.
Berry’s extensive music catalog includes hits like “Maybellene” “Roll Over Beethoven” and Johnnie B. Good.”
Earlier in the year, Berry announced the release of his self-titled studio album Chuck.
