The “Waves” rapper publicly stated that he’d like a “sit down” with Recording Academy president Neil Portnow to discuss how the pair can make the annual showcase more inclusive of artists who’re deserving of some recognition, namely Future and Young Thug.
“Has anyone at the Grammys ever heard March Madness???” West tweeted. “Yes I have a problem with the Grammys.” On his “Highlights” collaborator, the 38-year-old mentioned, “We need to see Young Thug at the Grammys. Not just me and Jay in a suit.”
The Chicago native later asked Portnow to reach out to him “so we can make the Grammys culturally relevant again,” a request which Portnow received and later shared his thoughts on the matter.
“Kanye West is a creative pioneer who has been recognized and honored by The Recording Academy time and again,” Portnow released in a statement. “We value his input as a member of the creative community, and our doors are always open to him. I continue to welcome Kanye, personally, to engage in a direct and productive dialogue about the future of music and the important role that music creators play in shaping that future.”
