Gates had claimed Miranda Dixon was grabbing at his shorts, and had tried to pull him off of the stage. He had attempted to use Florida’s notorious Stand Your Ground law to have the case dismissed, but the judge rejected it.
During the trial, Gates’s lawyer argued that his client’s foot never touched Dixon, and that the 19-year old was trying to set up a civil settlement.
However the jury disagreed, and today Gates was found guilty of misdemeanor battery.
While prosecutors had only asked for 60 days, the judge decided to triple the sentence.
Gates will also serve one year of probation.
