Police arrested Mario Hernandez, a 33-year-old man they say was caught around Manhattan with 25 kilos of light-blue crystal meth in his trunk. Authorities say the scene was similar to one in the hit TV show “Breaking Bad” which featured light-blue crystal meth. Hernandez is now facing multiple narcotics trafficking charges for the drugs found in boxes in the trunk of his Hyundai Sonata following a car stop outside the Holland Tunnel.

The drugs had a street value of $1.6 million. It is still unsure as to if he was planning to transport the drugs across the river to New Jersey. The boxes were so large that cops had to use a dolly to move the drugs away. Hernandez was held on $500,000 bond for criminal possession of controlled substance in Manhattan Criminal Court. Hernandez said that the car was a rental and he didn’t know the drugs were in the trunk.

City Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget Brennan said of the drug bust, “It is something that we continue to keep an eye on…The point of origin for the big methamphetamine that we’ve had is Mexico and if the Mexicans are pushing out meth the same way they are pushing out heroin and its finding its way to New York, then we’re going to have a problem.”

City stats show that more people in the city die from heroin overdoses than murder.
