Marvin Gaye III alleges that he submitted a treatment about a black family in the music business to the Writers Guild of America back in 2010. Titled Diamonds & Ballads, Gaye’s idea – based on the story of Motown exec Berry Gordy – was reportedly a derivation of 1980s television series Dynasty and HBO classic, The Sopranos.
In an effort to prove guilt on the part of Empire co-creator Lee Daniels, Gaye referenced a previous comment made by Daniels in which he likens the Fox hit to Dynasty.
This is the latest legal action taken by the Gaye family following its colossal suit against Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams and T.I. for their 2013 smash, “Blurred Lines.”
The original $7.3 million settlement was reduced to $5.3 million, provided Thicke’s request for a new trial be denied. This yet another lawsuit lodged against Empire, after Damon Dash took aim at the series, and a woman claimed the storyline of Cookie Lyon was based upon her life.
There’s no telling if the Gaye family will take another lawsuit “W,” but stay tuned for further developments.
