#BBB NEWS| 17 Most Extreme Celebrity Weight Loss And Gains, As Chris Hemsworth Endures 'Starvation Diet' For 'Heart Of The Sea' [PHOTOS]

In the world of Hollywood, the glamorous stars are willing to go to extreme lengths for their art and not just rely on help from a make-up artist and Photoshop to do the work.

Whether it's enduring the painful diet of Matthew McConaughey to beefing up like Mark Wahlberg, it would appear that there are no limits to an actor's commitment.

Now Thor star Chris Hemsworth has become the latest actor to go to extreme lengths for his part in new movie, The Heart of the Sea.

The Aussie actor, who is known for his rippling muscles, has transformed his wiry body in a way that we've never seen him before after embarking on a gruelling diet of just 500 calories a day in preparation for his role.

Chris, 32, who plays crew member Owen Chase who has been stranded at sea for 90 days, posted the pic on Instagram with the caption: "Just tried a new diet/training program called "Lost At Sea". Wouldn't recommend it.."

Chris Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth embarked on the “starvation diet” in 2013 for the Ron Howard-directed movie.

He wanted to look “scrawny” for the role, as he told Jimmy Kimmel, so dropped his calorie in take to just 500-600 calories a day.

Sharing a photo of his dramatic transformation just this weekend ahead of the movie's release next month, he wrote: "Just tried a new diet/training program called "Lost At Sea". Wouldn't recommend it.."

50 Cent

50 Cent was famously an incredibly buff gangster who has been shot a few times – even taking a bullet to his jaw.

But after making millions from rapping (and his shares in Vitamin Water – fact) he began working on a movie career and a liquid-only diet combined with daily three-hour treadmill walks led to THIS. He lost FOUR stone to play a cancer stricken football player in Things Fall Apart.

Christian Bale

It’s one of the most iconic images when you think of Hollywood stars who shed weight for a role. Christian Bale shrunk down to a breakable FOUR STONE. If you consider that 50 Cent lost a total of Christian’s entire body mass for his role – it makes it even more unbelievable. Christian had to bulk up soon after for Batman.

Matthew McConaughey

The beefy actor had lost more than three stone – a quarter of his body mass – in a few short months for his role as an AIDS sufferer in new movie Dallas Buyers Club.

And, as the Oscar-winning Texas-born star now reveals, he achieved the extreme weight loss on little-to-no food – making him bad-tempered, not to mention ravenous. “It was tough going, I’m not going to lie,” admits the 43-year-old. “The dieting was pretty hardcore. I was losing 7lb every week.”

Mila Kunis

Mila Kunis is the sexiest women on the planet but STILL had to shape up for her role in Black Swan. She had to be as nimble and petite as full-time ballerinas. Reflecting on her thin figure, she said ‘Flat, flat, flat! There was no shape, no form, nothing, nothing.’

Natalie Portman

The same situation for Natalie Potrman who shed 20lbs for starring in the Oscar nominated movie. What made her look so drastic is that she was arguably slimline enough before losing weight.

Jonah Hill

Funny man Jonah Hill had to lose some of his extra baggage to shoot 21 Jump Street. His role of being an undercover police officer with the fit one from Step Up as his co-star meant he couldn't exactly get the part without slimming down somewhat.

Jake Gyllenhaal

The handsome actor radically changed his appearance for his new role in movie Nightcrawler, according to reports in the US. Jake, 32, looks painfully thin with his protruding cheek bones and what looks like a generous rinse of Just For Men. Speaking about the role he stressed the importance to stay in a “mode where I was always a bit hungry.” He confessed: “I think [I’ve lost] probably a little over 20 pounds, something like that.

Gerard Butler

You might not be able to see Gerard Butler's face in the opposite picture but that's him alright. Gerard had to undergo gruelling gym training to play a lead role in warrior film 300. There have been a number of workouts designed by personal trainers since the blockbuster that were used to get the cast into shape. We tried a beginners level once and nearly fainted. True story.

Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks wore a little pair of pants to show off his slim physique in Castaway. He had to look like he's been stuck on a island for ages and it's fair to say the beard certainly helps.

Mark Wahlberg

We don’t know how many whole chicken’s at Nando's you have to eat before you grow biceps like Mark Wahlberg. It must be loads because he’s starring in the aptly named Pain and Gain alongside wrestling icon Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock.

Brad Pitt

When you're a handsome Hollywood star who's been cast as an illegal bare knuckle boxing gypsy champion, there's going to be some work that needs doing. Brad Pitt was every bit as amazing as you would have expected him to be in Snatch. Plus, we're sure Jennifer Aniston enjoyed this while she had it and Angelina Jolie looks back at what could still be...

Hilary Swank

For her role in Million Dollar Baby, Swank had to gain fifteen pounds so she looked hard enough to be punched and not fall over. She said, “Normally I only eat until I’m full. On this shoot, I kept eating more. Even when I was full, I’d eat more." This sounds like most nights for us.

Renee Zellweger

Renee Zellweger is mostly famous for being Bridget Jones. We would love to drink wine, watch rom-com's and eat tubs and tubs AND TUBS of ice cream, and be able to call it work. Renee had to do this weight gain and loss TWICE as well. That's the pain of a sequel, unfortunately.

Will Smith

Will Smith had to go from Fresh Prince to the Greatest of all Time as boxing legend Ali. There was no way he could have just popped on a pair of baggy shorts and some gloves to get in the ring. Will hit the gym five times a week and did fitness workouts on his days off. Fair play.

Charlize Theron

Sexy Charlize Theron was on a mission to lose the weight she gained for movie Monster in time for the Acadamy awards. She lost more than a stone in a month against doctors orders to look her best.

Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson slimmed down out of her daisy dukes and into a skimpy and equally sexy bikini for movie Dukes of Hazard. We won't judge you if you carry on staring at this photo for a little...
