The Fresh Prince Will Smith once said that the starring role in Quentin Tarantino’s spaghetti western Django Unchained wasn’t “big enough” to be considered the lead. Now, almost two years later, the entertainer is changing his tune.

Smith, who will embark on a world tour with his friend DJ Jazzy Jeff in the future, said during The Hollywood Reporter’s annual Actor’s Roundtable that the film was too violent for him to consider being a part of. The role of Django went to Jamie Foxx instead.

“We can’t look at what happens in Paris and want to f**k somebody up for that,” he said in reference to the recent terrorist attacks in France. “Violence begets violence. I just couldn’t connect to violence being the answer. Love had to be the answer.” Tarantino’s films are known for their over-the-top violent scenes, and Big Willie wanted the film to be much more than the gore.

“I wanted to make the greatest love story that African Americans had ever seen. We talked, we met, we sat for hours and hours about it. I wanted to make that movie so badly, but I felt the only way was, it had to be a love story, not a vengeance story.”

Smith also acknowledged that he hasn’t discussed the film since with its director. Smith is set to star as Deadshot in the highly-anticipated super-villain flick, Suicide Squad, which certainly may have a lot of violence in it.
