In an interview with The Guardian, his daughter Rosa Isela Guzmán Ortiz says her father traveled to California twice while on the run from Mexican authorities.
Shortly after his infamous interview with Sean Penn in Mexico, the kingpin paid a visit to Guzmán Ortiz and other relatives to ensure their safety. She also provided documents to The Guardian confirming her identity as El Chapo’s daughter.
She was reportedly granted permission from her father to speak to the media.
“My dad deposited the money in a bank account with a lawyer and a while after he came to see the house, his house. He came twice,” she said. She fended off questions on exactly how the 58-year-old evaded the heavily guarded border. “I asked him the same, believe me.”
Guzmán Ortiz expressed the Mexican government were aware of El Chapo’s actions and turned a blind eye since they allegedly accepted payments from him. Her family is considering releasing copies of checks and written agreements made with specific politicians. “My dad is not a criminal. The government is guilty,” she said. “If there’s a pact, they don’t respect it. Now that they catch him they say he’s a criminal, a killer. But they didn’t say that when they asked for money for their campaigns. They’re hypocrites.”
If Guzmán Ortiz’s story holds up, his capture could be seen as a trap by Mexican authorities. After his prison escape in July, he was recaptured Jan. 8 after a deadly shooting at his hideaway home in Sinaloa. He was captured in a nearby hotel in a different raid.
The question remains on when El Chapo will be extradited to the U.S. The drug lord has agreed to the notion, but would like an “unelevated” prison sentence in a medium-security prison. The process can take years. In total, 34 people have been arrested in connection with El Chapo’s prison escape, including the former director of the Altiplano prison and the head of Mexico’s federal prison system.
