Sunday night (April 11) the 47-year-old accepted MTV’s Generation Award, or as he jokingly called it “the old-ass dude” award for his continuous contributions to music and movies.
After co-host and fellow Philadelphian Kevin Hart introduced him followed by medley of his famous songs by The Lonely Island, Smith hugged and kissed his sons Trey and Jaden as he made his way to the stage to accept his golden popcorn.
“This is funny, because I was in Brooklyn the other day shooting and these women came out. They’re like 35, 40 years old and they’re screaming ‘Oh my God! Will! Will! Will!’ and I was like c’mon, you want to do a little Snapchat or something,” Smith said. “And they’re screaming, and then there’s this one kid and he’s like 8-years-old and he’s wrapped up and he’s all like ‘Oh my God! Oh my God! I don’t know who you are. I don’t know who you are.’ and I was like ah man. So I leaned down to him and said ‘I’m the Karate Kid’s dad’ then he’s like ‘Oh, that’s Jaden’s dad. That’s Jaden’s dad. So this is coming at the right time for me.”
Smith, sporting his famous smile, then became emotional while reminiscing on his seasoned career and expressed undying gratitude.
“This June marks 30 years in this business for me. I’m humbled and I just want all of you to know that I am dedicated to being a light in this world,” Smith said. “There’s a lot of suffering. A lot of people are suffering in this world and when you see my material and when I present myself in public and what I’m trying to build with my family and friends, I just want all of you to know I am dedicated until I die to light and love. Thank you all.”
So dope, Mr. Smith. Congrats.
