“How do you ask Quincy Jones what was his musical influences? He’s our musical influence. ‘What were yours?’ That’s too much. Too much legacy right there,” Kendrick said, just before their meeting of the minds.
In the first minutes of their exchange, Jones challenges K. Dot’s perceptions of the origin of rap, schooling him on the genre’s West African roots. Later picking Jones’ brain about music, culture and life, Kendrick asked about one of the legend’s collaborator that many folks inquire about: Michael Jackson. Expectantly awaiting stories about Thriller studio sessions, Jones instead offered a tool of knowledge that could apply to Kendrick, as well as any musician.
“We went through 800 songs. Because I learned 50 years ago, a great song could make the worst singer a star. And a bad song could not be saved by the three best singers in the world.”
Jones went on to call K. Dot a “beautiful brother,” and “the future,” a co-sign the rapper will surely never forget. Read more about their epic meeting here.
