Reportedly dying in his sleep from a heart attack in Norfolk, Va., the former center was set to participate in a golf tournament. Friend and former teammate Calvin Murphy confirmed the news to Fox 26’s Mark Berman:
Malone was the first player to enter the NBA straight from high school back in 1974, signing with the Utah Stars for the American Basketball Association. He went on to snag three NBA MVP trophies (1979, 1982 and 1983), one championship title with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1983, and a 12-year-straight run at the NBA All-Star Game.
He played for a total of 20 seasons between 1976 and 1995, and ranks No. 5 in all-time assists and No. 8 in career points. Malone was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 2001.
The Philadelphia 76ers released a statement on Malone’s passing, according to ESPN:
“It is with a deep sense of sadness that the Sixers family mourns the sudden loss of Moses Malone. It is difficult to express what his contributions to this organization — both as a friend and player — have meant to us, the city of Philadelphia and his faithful fans,” it read.
