Nineteen years ago yesterday, hip-hop unwillingly said goodbye to Tupac Amaru Shakur. While still a heavy blow to the culture, ‘Pac’s absence would only help to craft the artistry and presence of one of it’s shining princes: Kendrick Lamar.

To honor the late rapper, K.Dot wrote a heartfelt open letter thanking Shakur for being an inspiration.

Kendrick may have only been a child when he first saw the captivating, yet sometimes enigmatic emcee on the set of the“California Love (Remix)” video, but none the less, Kendrick was in awe and inspired.
