The film, scheduled for release in 2017, is based on an upcoming book written by Margot Lee Shetterly about African American women who helped launch America into space.
According to Amazon:

The Wrap reports that the singer/dancer will be portraying Mary Jackson, the youngest member of the group. Henson will play Katherine Johnson, Spencer will play Dorothy Vaughan and Kevin Costner will portray the head of the space program.
This is Monáe’s second film role in her career; she is acting in Moonlight, which is slated to release in the fall. She should fit in just well at NASA in Hidden Figures, as it’s known by fans that she has futuristic, robotic alter-ego known as Cindi Mayweather. Congrats, Q.U.E.E.N!
