#BBB NEWS| Janelle Monáe & Taraji P. Henson To Star In Film About Black Women In NASA

The “Electric Lady” Janelle Monáe will be starring alongside Empire’s Taraji P. Henson and Oscar winner Octavia Spencer in the Ted Melfi-directed film, Hidden Figures.

The film, scheduled for release in 2017, is based on an upcoming book written by Margot Lee Shetterly about African American women who helped launch America into space.

According to Amazon:

“Set against the backdrop of the Jim Crow South and the civil rights movement, the never-before-told true story of NASA’s African-American female mathematicians who played a crucial role in America’s space program—and whose contributions have been unheralded, until now…Moving from World War II through NASA’s golden age, touching on the civil rights era, the Space Race, the Cold War, and the women’s rights movement, Hidden Figures interweaves a rich history of scientific achievement and technological innovation with the intimate stories of five women whose work forever changed the world—and whose lives show how out of one of America’s most painful histories came one of its proudest moments.”

The Wrap reports that the singer/dancer will be portraying Mary Jackson, the youngest member of the group. Henson will play Katherine Johnson, Spencer will play Dorothy Vaughan and Kevin Costner will portray the head of the space program.

This is Monáe’s second film role in her career; she is acting in Moonlight, which is slated to release in the fall. She should fit in just well at NASA in Hidden Figures, as it’s known by fans that she has futuristic, robotic alter-ego known as Cindi Mayweather. Congrats, Q.U.E.E.N!
