On Tuesday (July 28), the network revealed that iconic industry game-changers, Queen Latifah and Mary J. Blige, have signed on to be a part of their song-and-dance adaptation of The Wizard of Oz.
Latifah will play Emerald City’s leader, Wiz, while Blige takes on the bada** persona of the Wicked Witch of the West, a.k.a. Evillene. Entertainment Weekly also reports that, “they’ll star in The Wiz alongside previously announced cast member Stephanie Mills, who’s playing Auntie Em.”
Executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who both produced NBC’s musical telecasts The Sound of Music Live! and last year’s Peter Pan Live, gushed over having the ladies a part of the production.
“We are so happy reuniting with Latifah,” they said in a press release. “We’ve been friends for a long time and we’ve had quite a lot of success together. To see her play the iconic role of the Wiz and make it her own is going to be one of the joys of producing this event.”
Leon also told TODAY, “I can’t wait to watch Mary bring the badness that is Evillene.”
The Wiz Live!‘s Zadan and Meron also made NBC’s 2013 The Sound of Music Live! and last year’s Peter Pan Live!
