According to CNN Money, the F. Gary Gray film earned $56.1 million in theaters, almost doubling the $29 million it cost to make the film.
The film exceeded exceptions and was projected to bring in close to $30 million. The biopic represents the sixth number one opening this year for Universal pictures and the best R-Rated film to debut in August ever.
Along with promotion, the film’s success can also be attributed to its release, which comes during a time of police brutality against unarmed black men and women.
Congrats to the cast. Straight Outta Compton is in theaters now.
