“I was already proud to be a Dior woman, but to be a black Dior woman and the first: It did something else for me,” Rih states. On the topic of her PUMA collaboration, the “Work” singer said the inspiration behind making the line unisex stems from her upbringing around her brothers.
“I always wanted to play the games they played and play rough and wear pants and go outside,” she said. “Women feel empowered when they can do the things that are supposed to be only for men, you know? It breaks boundaries, it’s liberating, and it’s empowering when you feel like, Well I can do that, too.”
With her ANTI world tour underway, Rih also carved out time to take on a role in the Luc Besson directed film Valerian and the city of a Thousand Planets. The movie will follow the plot of an undisclosed French comic string, prompting Besson to reveal he was blown away by her presence on set.
“As you can imagine, because she’s number one in her business, she has a protection, like a crocodile. But she really let herself go. I was so touched by her,” Besson said.
The conversation later shifted to the critical-acclaim of her album ANTI and Beyonce’s “Formation” last month. Rih responded to a question about spectators hinting that the leading ladies were battling for the top spot on the charts, stating, “They just get so excited to feast on something that’s negative. Something that’s competitive. Something that’s, you know, a rivalry. And that’s just not what I wake up to. Because I can only do me. And nobody else is going to be able to do that.”
