Perhaps one of the most tragic aspects of the plane crash was that several of the passengers survived the initial crash landing, but were killed in the ensuing fire due to the inadequate emergency preparedness of the Port Harcourt airport.
The airport only had one fire truck and no ambulances, which meant the rescue process went extremely slow.
Once rescue workers were able to get to the downed plane, they immediately rushed 7 survivors to the hospital. Sadly, only two of these victims survived, the other five succumbed to their wounds.
Many Nigerians took to Twitter to point out that not much has changed since the tragedy 10 years ago. Recently, Port Harcourt was voted the world’s worst airport by the travelers’ guide “Guide to Sleeping in Airports”. Below are some of the tweets commemorating the plane crash:
