#BBB NEWS| ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Named Best Picture By African-American Film Critics Association

The awards keep rolling in for Straight Outta Compton. According to Variety, the biopic which chronicled N.W.A’s rise to fame and the trials and tribulations that the group experienced once they reached the top, has been selected as Best Picture by the African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA).

In addition to the top honor, the movie also won Best Ensemble Cast while its Jason Mitchell nabbed a trophy for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Eazy-E.

The motion picture, which recently became one of the top-grossing movies directed by an African American, won’t be alone in racking up the accolades when the awards are handed out in February.

Newly-released Creed received three awards including Breakout Performance for Michael B. Jordan, Will Smith won Best Actor for his work in Concussion (out Dec. 25), and Dope, Rick Famuyiwa’s production, won for Best Screenplay.

Straight Outta Compton, which was released in August, was subject to diverse critical acclaim as whispers of the F. Gary Gray-directed film possibly taking home gold at the Oscars picked up steam. Though the Academy has yet to announce nominees for the 2016 ceremony, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal is “bullish” about the movie’s chances.

The AAFCA will hold its awards ceremony in Hollywood on Feb. 10.
