#BBB NEWS| Queen Latifah To Star In Lee Daniels’ Next TV Drama

After a wonderful turn as The Wizard of Oz in NBC’s The Wiz Live!, Queen Latifah will be starring in another music-centered role in the near future.

On Dec. 8, Deadline announced that the renaissance woman will star in Lee Daniels’ upcoming pilot about the Atlanta music scene, which is currently untitled.

The pilot revolves around three girls who form a girl group, and of course, face the trials and tribulations of the industry along their journey. Latifah will play Carlotta, an ATL- beauty shop owner with a monster set of pipes who “will become a surrogate mother to the three girls – even though she doesn’t approve of their musical dreams.”

Daniels and his team put out a nationwide casting call to find the show’s leads, and locked Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O’Grady as the three budding singers, Star, Alexandra and Simone, respectively. Production begins later this month in Atlanta.

Queen Latifah is certainly no stranger to acting and singing in the same project. The rapper-turned-actress has done double duty in The Wiz Live!, Hairspray, Joyful Noise and Chicago, for which she garnered an Oscar nomination in 2002 for her portrayal of Matron “Mama” Morton.

She also portrayed blues singer Bessie Smith in the HBO film, Bessie, which hit the small screen this past May.
